Duotone Duke 2027 — Five Battens, 300g Lighter - Worthing Watersports

Five-batten sails nearly disappeared for a decade, and the reason was simple: they were heavy. The Duke is Duotone's answer to that, and it is their most successful five-batten sail — a proper wind-range sail that doesn't feel like you're dragging a mainsail around.

For 2027 the construction and shape carry over with a black/white colourway. Eight sizes, 4.2 all the way to 6.7, which is the widest spread in the wave and freewave line-up.

Why five battens, still

More battens means more control and a bigger wind range — which is exactly what you want when the wind is swinging 12 knots either side of the forecast, as it does along this coast most of the autumn. The trade has always been low-end power, because a heavily battened sail is harder for the wind to inflate and harder to pump.

Batten Free Center fixes the low end

The Duke borrows the Batten Free Center from the Super_Hero: rather than spacing the battens evenly, there's a bigger gap between the foot batten and the batten above the boom. The boom area inflates more easily, so it planes early, and the extra batten density up top adds stability where you want it. A high draft position and a deep profile do the rest for getting onto the plane without a pumping session.

Light Done Right

The 300g saving comes from replacing multi-layer reinforcements with a single layer of high-quality fabric, plus the one-piece sleeve — not from thinner film. Thin film makes a sail spongy, which ironically makes it feel heavier in your hands because the energy disappears into the stretch. This is the whole reason Duotone can still offer a 5 year warranty on it.

💡 Sam's Tip

The 6.7 is the sleeper size here. If you're on a freewave or small freeride board and you keep missing the marginal days, that's the sail that turns them into sessions. And if you're deciding between this and the Duke SLS: the SLS is 400–500g lighter for around £90 a size more. Worth it if you sail weekly, not if you sail monthly.
