What's in the box

The question we're asked most is what comes with the board, so here it is. Every Duotone surfboard comes with a matching set of fins. They're Futures-compatible, so if you ever want to try a different set, standard Futures fins will fit the boxes.

Every board also comes with a tail pad. It isn't stuck down, because you choose how to set the board up when you get it ready: stick down the tail pad it comes with, or use the foot strap insert pads instead (more on those below). Unlike twintips, surfboards don't come with a grab handle.

The one thing you need to add: a front traction pad

A twintip has bindings. A surfboard has self-adhesive traction pads that you stick on yourself. What you need to buy with your board is the front traction pad, which covers the front and middle section of the deck, where your front foot goes.

It's made from high-density EVA foam with a corduroy-style surface for grip and cushioning, with cutouts to save weight. It comes in three colours, dark grey, grey/purple and grey/turquoise, so you can match it to the board's colours or pick what you prefer. It's £76.

If you want even more grip from the back foot, there's an optional Traction Pad Pro Back (£64) for the Whip, Volt and Provoke. It adds an extra strong, extra grip tail kicker, but it's an upgrade, not a necessity. It's out of stock at the moment, so get in touch if you'd like us to let you know when it's back.

Want foot straps? Add the insert pad set

If you want extra control, any Duotone surfboard can now take foot straps. You just need the self-adhesive Foot Strap Insert Traction Pad set (£76). It comes as a set of two insert pads, one for the front foot strap and one for the rear, so one purchase covers both. The inserts replace the middle section of the traction pad, so you still buy the full front pad as well.

Fitting matters. Sand the deck down very lightly, give it a good clean, then stick the inserts on. Then leave the board for 24 to 48 hours before you use it, so the adhesive can bond fully. They're extremely well stuck on and permanent, so take your time getting them in the right place.

Whip — small waves and strapless freestyle

The Whip is a compact board with a hip-squash tail, increased rocker and thinner rails, so it turns tightly and keeps its speed in weak waves. It's shaped by Sky Solbach and works well for strapless freestyle too. It comes in 4'11", 5'1" and 5'3". The Whip SLS (£999) has a cork shock absorber and Innegra Shield for a strong, lightweight build. The Whip D/LAB (£1,159) is lighter and stiffer, with carbon construction and RMF shock absorber that pushes heel dents back out over time.

Volt — small to medium waves

The Volt has a low-entry rocker and extra front-foot volume, so it gets planing early and drives through mushy waves. The double concave bottom gives it grip for tight turns. It comes in 4'11", 5'1" and 5'3". The Volt SLS is £999 and the Volt D/LAB is £1,159, with the same step up in weight and feel as the Whip.

Blur — the all-round wave board

The Blur is the board for bigger waves, with a lean rocker for fast acceleration and a round tail that holds grip through turns. The D/LAB is ridden by big wave specialist James Carew. It comes in 5'3", 5'6" and 5'9". The Blur SLS is £999 and the Blur D/LAB is £1,159.

Provoke — strapless freestyle

The Provoke (£1,099) is built for strapless freestyle, with a parallel outline, wide tail for pop, and aggressive bottom channels for stable landings. It has a full PVC high-impact core for durability and comes in one size, 5'1".

💡 Sam's Tip

Here's the simple version: buy your board, buy a front traction pad, and add the optional insert pad set if you want foot straps. Then you're good to go. If you're going for the inserts, decide before you stick anything down, because they're permanent, and remember to give them 24 to 48 hours to bond before you ride.
