Which Duotone Wave Board Is Right for You? - Worthing Watersports

Worthing Watersports Buyer’s Guide – Ultra Grip vs Grip [TRI]

With the launch of the 2026 Duotone wave board range fast approaching, many riders are asking the same question:

Should I choose the Ultra Grip or the Grip [TRI]? And should I ride it as a Tri-fin or Quad?

At Worthing Watersports, we’re a Duotone specialist store, so we’ve broken down the differences in shape, performance, and feel so you can find the right board for your style, conditions, and goals.

1. What Kind of Waves Do You Ride?

  • Smaller onshore waves / slower, rounder surf?

The Grip [TRI] has a slightly lower nose rocker, which means it planes earlier and keeps speed better in weaker waves. It’s great for generating drive when the surf isn’t firing.

  • Bigger, more powerful groundswells?

The Ultra Grip has a higher nose rocker, giving you more control at high speed and on steep, critical sections. It bites into the wave face and lets you commit to full-rail turns without pushing back.

2. Do You Prioritise Early Planing or Control in Heavy Conditions?

  • Early planing / more forgiving in marginal wind: Grip [TRI]

  • High-speed stability in serious surf: Ultra Grip

3. What’s Your Preferred Riding Style?

  • Loose, agile turns and versatility?

The Tri-fin setup (Grip [TRI]) offers dynamic turning and a more skatey feel, ideal for tight top turns and mixing up your lines.

  • More hold, stability and drive?

The Quad setup (Ultra Grip [QUAD]) locks you in on the face, giving stability when the swell gets heavy and the speed climbs.

4. What About Outline and Tail Shape?

  • Grip:

    • Wider nose = more lift and resistance in smaller surf

    • Wider tail = faster acceleration and more pop for jumping/freestyle moves

  • Ultra Grip:

    • Narrower nose = more control at speed

    • Narrower tail = more hold in big waves and smoother rail-to-rail transitions

5. How Do the Bottom Shapes Differ?

  • Grip: Keeps a V-bottom throughout for comfort and smoothness.

  • Ultra Grip: Flattens under the feet and runs to a mono concave at the tail for a crisper, more responsive feel.

6. Which Construction Should You Choose?

Both come in:

  • D/LAB: Ultra-light, premium materials, highest performance, lowest drag.

  • SLS: Still high-end, slightly heavier, more robust, and better value.

Worthing Watersports Recommendation

If you’re riding mostly UK onshore and mixed conditions, or want a board that planes early and handles variety well — go Grip [TRI].

If you’re chasing big wave days, powerful groundswells, or want maximum control at speed — the Ultra Grip is your weapon.
